The Specialty of Prosthetic Dentistry, and Best Choice Dental Implant Center
Many of our patients are familiar with the dental specialties of Orthodontics (braces), Oral Surgery, Endodontics (root canals) and Periodontics (gum treatment), but most have never heard of the Specialty of Prosthetic Dentistry (Prosthodontics). These same patients often remark after successful treatment for their particular problems, “I’ve had so many dental problems over the years. No one could make me comfortable or look the way I wanted. Our first goal is Healthy Teeth and Healthy Gums for a Lifetime, and our second goal is to help you Keep What You Have.
If you have a great smile, that’s wonderful; but it won’t last a “lifetime” if the gums and the teeth are not healthy. That is why our main emphasis when treating any patient is to start with a sound, healthy foundation. That means Healthy Teeth and Gums. If the foundation is not healthy, the prosthetic restoration will not last, no matter how good it looks.
You wouldn’t build a house on quicksand. Why would you want to build a dental bridge, or do a cosmetic reconstruction with porcelain veneers, if the teeth have gum disease and are losing bone? You wouldn’t knowingly do this. It would be doomed to fail in just a few short years, and the cosmetics may deteriorate even faster.
Our third goal is restoring function, i.e. replacing missing teeth, and our last goal is restoring Cosmetics. That is not to say that Cosmetics is not important, because it is. However, if you have limited funds to invest in your dental health, then investing in a healthy foundation is paramount. You can live a long healthy and comfortable dental life even if the teeth don’t look pretty; but if the foundation is not healthy, no matter how much you spend on your Cosmetics, the result will be short lived.
